Who, what and where tops America’s local search results?
TeleNav local search - Top 5 businesses
TeleNav has released usage data that reveals which US regions rely most on GPS navigation not only for directions but also for finding nearby businesses, and which businesses they search for most often.

The data indicates that while customers in various cities depend on some GPS features more than others, when it comes to searching out nearby businesses on the road, drivers across the country seem to be in agreement on their favourites.

According to an analysis of searches conducted by TeleNav users in December 2009, Wal-Mart topped the list of US businesses sought out by TeleNav customers while using their GPS service. Starbucks was second, followed by Target, Best Buy and Bank of America.

TeleNav data from all GPS point of interest (POI) searches for the entire 2009 year indicates that drivers living in or visiting some US cities need more assistance locating local hotspots than in others.

More searches occurred in Los Angeles than any other US city, followed by the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, Chicago, Houston and Atlanta.

In terms of searches for fast food, TeleNav's GPS search data shows that more customers searched for pizza than any other food, followed by Chinese food, burgers, American food and Mexican food.

While users in all states used GPS for travel guidance, TeleNav's usage data for the entire 2009 year indicates that Maryland residents used GPS guidance on more than twice as many trips per month than the national average. Completing the top five areas with residents relying heavily on GPS navigation are the District of Columbia, Massachusetts, North Carolina and California.

TeleNav users in Los Angeles used GPS navigation to reroute around traffic more than any other city in the country. The other top five cities where drivers preferred to use GPS to avoid gridlocked traffic included Washington DC, New York City, Chicago and Atlanta.

The December data also indicates that more residents in Phoenix searched for gas prices than in any other city. The next four cost conscious drivers were residents in San Antonio, Cleveland, Detroit and Jacksonville.
