Word on the street is that Facebook is preparing to launch a new location based feature that will allow users to share their location with their friends.
However, to comply with the many different privacy regulations around the world, location sharing will have to be an opt-in feature.
None of this should come a surprise to Facebook users.
When Facebook updated its privacy policy late last year and asked its 350+ million users to update their privacy settings, it specifically mentioned location information:
"When you share your location with others or add a location to something you post, we treat that like any other content you post (for example, it is subject to your privacy settings)."
The policy also noted: "If we offer a service that supports this type of location sharing we will present you with an opt-in choice of whether you want to participate."
It might be a good idea for Facebook's 400+ million users to read the small print ...
