The new name, Location Labs, more accurately reflects the company's core speciality of offering developers information on phone locations gathered directly from mobile operators. The company provides a link between carriers who possess a vast wealth of location data and the mobile developers who need or want it the most. Its Universal Location Services API lets developers tap into server-based location data to locate more than 180 million phones without the need for any downloads. They can thus produce platform-independent geo apps.
Now Location Labs is launching a geofencing API which can be triggered whenever a user is near a certain location or close to a friend with a location-aware mobile phone.
The Location Labs development platform includes services for geofencing and location privacy. Where privacy is a concern, users can opt in or out of location sharing via SMS, mobile web or web portal.
Developers have used Location Labs services to build and enhance apps in a range of vertical markets including social, marketing, gaming and logistics tracking.
