Microsoft demonstrates augmented reality maps
Bing Streetside Flickr
Microsoft has unveiled new augmented reality features designed to make its Bing Maps more true to life.

Bing Maps architect Blaise Aguera y Arcas showed what's to come during a demo at the Technology, Entertainment, Design (TED) conference in California last week. He showed how Bing Maps are incorporating Flickr images into streetside views, adding indoor panoramas, making it possible to see live video from specific locations on a map, and using WorldWide Telescope to present a view of the sky.

The Streetside Photos feature takes geotagged photos from Flickr and relates them to the Streetside imagery in Bing Maps. It is also possible to add historical imagery overlays to show what a current location looked like in the past.

With WorldWide Telescope integration the user will be able to "walk" outside in Streetside mode, look up and study the heavens.

Indoor Panoramas will provide an experience identical to Streetside, but not limited to places where you can drive. It is intended to be useful at pedestrian venues such as theme parks.

The Video Overlay will overlay real-time video on street-level imagery, adding visual information.
