
The companies are expanding their long-standing relationship to define a new mobile platform more advanced than today's smartphones, notebooks and netbooks. Their joint strategy encompasses the development of a variety of innovative hardware, software and mobile Internet services.
The intention is to transform the user experience by marrying the best features and capabilities of computers and communications. The companies envisage user-friendly, pocket-sized devices running next-level applications with always-on, always-connected wireless Internet access.
"This collaboration will ultimately deliver open and standards-based technologies, which history shows drive rapid innovation, adoption and consumer choice," predicted Anand Chandrasekher, Intel senior vice president and general manager, Ultra Mobility Group.
Kai Öistämö, executive vice president, devices at Nokia, added: "We will explore new ideas in designs, materials and displays that will go far beyond devices and services on the market today."
The partnership includes technology development and co-operation in several open source software initiatives.
